MODULE

The online Social and Behavioral Implications of Autonomous Vehicles and Services module focuses on identifying a range of potential positive and negative implications that could result when autonomous vehicles (AV) and services are deployed in large volumes — including how these systems will be used; who they will serve; some of the remaining societal challenges; how operators are trained and informed; as well as new and continued safety considerations.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Understand that a number of societal challenges related to vehicle automation remain
  • Outline a range of “unknowns” associated with how autonomous/highly automated vehicles and services might be used
  • Illustrate that populations that could most benefit from vehicle automation are not necessarily those which the systems are being design for (at least yet)
  • Describe how equity in mobility needs to be carefully considered when manufacturing and deploying autonomous vehicles
  • Illustrate how vehicle safety will remain a challenge for decades to come, and some new safety challenges that will be created

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

  • Introduction and Understanding the Total Impact (39 min)
  • The Potential for Behavioral Changes (37 min)
  • Serving Those with Existing Mobility Limitations and Mobility Equity (47 min)
  • Changes in Operator Knowledge and Understanding (53 min)
  • Safety Consideration with Vehicle Automation (38 min)
  • Seamless Integrated Mobility Systems and Challenges in Establishing One (32 min)

Learn at your own pace with modules that are are divided into shorter segments.

To complete a specialization, purchase and complete all four modules together in 180 days. For individual modules, you have 60 days to complete.

To successfully complete Social and Behavioral Implications of Autonomous Vehicles and Services, you must achieve an 80% passing grade on the module assessment.

Upon successful completion of 4 modules purchased as a group, you will receive the U-M Certificate in Current and Emerging Technologies.

Select 4 modules from one concentration to deepen your knowledge in a subject or area. If you choose a specialization, your certificate will note the specialization you completed.

There are no prerequisites for the Social and Behavioral Implications of Autonomous Vehicles and Services module. A bachelor’s degree in a science, engineering, or technical field is recommended, but not required.
