New Negotiation Skills Course

In the fall of 2024, Nexus is launching an impactful, one-day course called Negotiation Skills. Taught by Debra Levantrosser, a faculty member in Michigan Engineering, the certificate course prepares learners to successfully and confidently negotiate in any circumstance.

The Key to Successful Negotiation

With over thirty years in corporate America and two decades as a successful entrepreneur, Debra is well equipped to guide learners through the subtle dynamics of negotiation. She says, “In the course, we’re going to delve into human psychology. Why do people talk the way they do? Why do they ask for what they do? So we’re going to get into some of the psychology as well. It’s going to be a great course.”

Her experience has taught her that success comes from more than just technique. “One of the most important things that you need to negotiate successfully is confidence,” she explains. This course is about much more than just tips and tools—it’s about empowering participants to confidently achieve success in almost any scenario.

A Versatile Skill

Negotiation is not confined to the boardroom—it’s part of everyday life. “We have the opportunity to negotiate every single day in our personal lives and in our professional lives. When was the last time you asked for a raise? When was the last time you bought a house? Or sold a house? Hired a lawyer? Went to a garage sale? All of these are opportunities to negotiate,” says Debra. 

According to the instructor, there are three big reasons why this skill set is important today. She says, “Number one is that people don’t realize how many things are actually negotiable. The second thing is—let’s face it—money is tight today. And, a lot of times, negotiation is about money. Thirdly, I don’t like to see people get taken advantage of. I think if everyone learned to stand up for themselves a little bit more and tried to negotiate, they would end up in a better position.”

A Dynamic Learning Experience

Debra outlines a dynamic curriculum that starts with human psychology and extends to practical situations and personal tips. The course is thorough and interactive. Learners will discuss empathy and perspectives. They will consider various forms of communication, including phone calls, emails, texts, and face-to-face discussions. 

As a bonus, Debra will also share some of her secret tips and tricks. Learners will get ideas for lowering hotel room rates, cell phone bills, and more.

Learners can expect to emerge from the course with a newfound confidence. They will know when to negotiate, how to negotiate, and how to navigate either side of a scenario. Immediately after learning, they can apply new tips and skills to work and personal situations.
